Early symptoms may include intermittent pain, tingling, or numbness that travels into the buttock, thigh, calf, or foot. Some people initially notice symptoms after prolonged sitting, lifting, bending, or physical activity.
Weakness is particularly important to recognize. Difficulty lifting the foot, standing on the toes, climbing stairs, or maintaining normal leg strength may indicate that a nerve is being affected.
Symptoms that persist, worsen, or interfere with walking, sleeping, work, or daily activities warrant medical evaluation.
How Is Lumbar Radiculopathy Diagnosed?
Diagnosing lumbar radiculopathy typically begins with a medical history and physical examination. A clinician may evaluate muscle strength, reflexes, sensation, walking patterns, and specific movements that reproduce symptoms.
Imaging may be recommended when symptoms are persistent, severe, recurrent, or associated with neurological changes. MRI is commonly used to evaluate spinal discs, nerve compression, spinal stenosis, and other structural causes of nerve-related symptoms.
In certain situations, electrodiagnostic testing may also help evaluate nerve function and distinguish radiculopathy from other causes of leg symptoms.
How Is Lumbar Radiculopathy Treated?
Treatment depends on the underlying cause, severity of symptoms, and whether neurological problems are present.
Conservative care may include physical therapy, activity modification, and other clinician-directed treatments designed to reduce irritation and improve mobility. When symptoms do not improve adequately, a physician may consider targeted treatments such as an epidural injection or other minimally invasive interventions.
If significant nerve compression does not respond to nonsurgical treatment, surgery may sometimes be considered. The goal is to address the underlying source of nerve compression when appropriate.
When Should You Seek Medical Attention for Leg Pain?
Leg pain deserves prompt evaluation when it is persistent, repeatedly radiates from the lower back into the leg, or is accompanied by numbness, tingling, or weakness.
Sudden or progressive weakness, significant loss of sensation, or new problems controlling the bladder or bowel require urgent medical attention. These symptoms can indicate serious nerve compression that should not be ignored.
Can Lumbar Radiculopathy Be Prevented?
Not every case of lumbar radiculopathy can be prevented, particularly when age-related spinal changes are involved. However, maintaining regular physical activity, using proper lifting techniques, strengthening the muscles that support the spine, and avoiding prolonged inactivity may support overall spine health.
Early evaluation of recurring back and leg symptoms may also help identify spinal problems before they become more limiting.
